Australian Engineering and Development Consultancy firm wins a Construction Tender in Sri Lanka

Surbana Jurong Infrastructure – a private consultancy group based in Singapore (SJIPL) and SMEC International Pvt, its engineering subsidiary in Australia has won a contract from the Government of Sri Lanka to modernize the island’s four secondary main cities.
SMEC Holdings Limited (formerly Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation) is an Australian-based company that offers engineering-based consulting services around the globe on significant infrastructure projects. SMEC carries out feasibility studies, design, tender and contract management, oversight of building and project management. The firm offers engineering services for projects related to transportation, hydropower and other energy sources, water and environment, and natural resources. Its headquarters are situated in Victoria, Melbourne.
The tender floated under the ‘Sustainable Urban Development Project’ financed by the Asian Development Bank is to upgrade road infrastructure in the towns of Kurunegala, Rathnapura, Dambulla and Trincomalee. According to the ADB, the project which is under purview of the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development, and seeks to create non-commercial towns with growth potential in financial corridors and major nodes across the island nation. Hence, the project would make transformative investments aimed at generating liveable, prosperous communities that leverage industrial and economic ties.
The State Information Office reported earlier this week that the Ministry decided to award the project’s planning and procurement agreement to the SMEC International Joint Venture with Surbana Jurong Infrastructure, Resources Development Consultants Ltd. and Master Hellie’s Engineering Consultants (Pvt) Ltd. where Master Hellie’s Engineering Consultants, will act as the local subcontractors of the project.

OSL Take:

The aggressive development program conducted by the Sri Lankan government covering the entire nation has led to the massive expansion of the country’s business/investment opportunities. Hence, this tender would further improve the space for opportunity for Australian firms to participate in more tenders in Sri Lanka. Further, this transaction improves investor and business confidence in Sri Lanka as foreign companies could look at the project pipeline in Sri Lanka and explore possibilities for business/investment in the national development program.
