Amazon Web Services to train Sri Lankan students in cloud computing and artificial intelligence

Sri Lanka is to receive assistance from AWS Educate, which is a unit of Amazon Web Services (AWS), to train 50,0000 Sri Lankan students in cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) in the next two years.
The training programme is to take place in collaboration with a local industry group – Sri Lanka Association of Software and Service Companies (SLASSCOM).
SLASSCOM has reportedly said it was collaborating with the AWS through its global AWS Educate program to train the engineering and non-engineering students by 2022.
AWS Educate is Amazon’s global initiative to provide students comprehensive resources for building skills in cloud technology.
According to reports, the collaboration aims to work towards boosting the education system to produce skilled workers ready for the digital, connected work of the future.
The local media has reported that the education framework will enable students to access virtual AI and machine learning (ML) labs and high-performance computing on the cloud to enhance higher studies programs and research initiatives.
SLASSCOM Hot Skills Survey 2018 has reported that cloud computing is the most trending technology with 79 percent in use, followed by artificial intelligence/machine learning (78 percent) and big data analytics (67 percent).
AWS is a subsidiary of Amazon that provides secure cloud service platform, offering compute power, database storage and content delivery, the local media has reported.

OSL take:

The training by AWS Educate to 5,000 Sri Lankan students on cloud computing and artificial intelligence is indicative of the high level of ICT knowledge among the student population in Sri Lanka. The government of Sri Lanka has also paid much attention to the development of ICT and digital infrastructure in the country. This would ensure a skilled workforce in ICT related fields in Sri Lanka. Hence, foreign ICT companies could explore business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s ICT as well as higher education sectors.
