Sri Lankan President looks for modern waste management systems to address local garbage problem
Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena is currently looking at modern methods of waste management to solve the country’s garbage disposal problem.
The President during his recent visit to Japan observed the operations of a modern waste management centre in Japan and has said he would inquire about such projects.
Sirisena has reportedly said he would also inquire into the possibility of obtaining assistance from Japan for such garbage disposal projects that would be launched in Sri Lanka.
During the observation tour of the Japanese facility, the head of the waste management centre had explained details of the work conducted in the centre to the President and his delegation.
According to reports, the city of Tokyo has over 9.3 million people and produces 11,000 metric tons of waste daily and there are 23 centres to assist in waste management.
The waste management centre visited by President Sirisena located in Shinagawa processes 600 metric tons of waste daily.
Reports state that the activities of the centre are being carried out in an environmental friendly manner utilizing modern technology.
A special feature at the centre is the conversion of heat into electrical energy which is a byproduct of the waste management process.

The attention paid by Sri Lankan President towards modern methods of waste management is an encouraging sign for foreign investors interested in providing waste management solutions. The country is currently facing a garbage crisis due to the lack of modern and efficient technologies of waste management. Several small scale projects to address the garbage disposal problem have already been implemented in several parts of Sri Lanka. Also, investors could look at waste to power projects in the country as well. Therefore, garbage disposal has opened up investment opportunities in Sri Lanka.
