Sri Lankan government gets Indian support for multiple initiatives aimed at enhancing egovernance

The governments of Sri Lanka and India have reached an agreement on the cooperation in the fields of IT and electronics.
India’s Minister of Law and Justice and Electronics and Information Technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad has reportedly signed a co-operation deal in IT and electronics with his Sri Lankan counterpart, Minister of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure, Harin Fernando.
The new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be a Joint Declaration of Intent for a pilot project on E-Office suite developed by India and a partnership between India’s National Knowledge Network (NKN) and the Lanka Education and Research Network (LEARN), reports state.
Under the programme multiple initiatives aimed at enhancing egovernance and academic research is expected to be launched.
Speaking at the event Prasad has expressed India’s commitment to share the outcome of the “Digital India” programme with the government of Sri Lanka and has assured India’s fullest cooperation towards making the island nation a digital inclusive nation.
“India will always be able to help Sri Lanka and I hope this pilot project becomes a powerful initiative for Sri Lanka’s efforts to create a digital society,” Minister Prasad has added.
Minister Fernando after thanking India for the support, has said there was scope for greater collaboration.
He has reportedly said the initiatives kicked off yesterday would further strengthen Sri Lanka’s ongoing efforts in accelerating IT and E-related governance and public service delivery for its strategic approach towards a digital economy
The e-Office, an electronic platform developed by the National Informatics Centre of India (NIC), which enables the conduct of office procedures electronically has reportedly been launched in Sri Lanka.
The E-office platform is widely used in government offices in India and has transformed government functioning into a more efficient and transparent mode, removing the need for processing and storage of conventional paper files.

The development egovernance in Sri Lanka with Indian assistance would help in the overall increase in efficiency and productivity, which would result in the expansion of the country’s economy. The Sri Lankan government has already commenced drafting the eSri Lanka policy framework which would take the country to the next generation. The pro-development aspects of the Sri Lankan economy would definitely create many business opportunities in the local economy.
