Sri Lankan government to conduct feasibility study on a domestic airport in the Kandy District

The Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka has reportedly approved a request to conduct a feasibility study on constructing a domestic airport in the Kandy District.
“It is proposed to have a new airport at Digana in the Kandy area to better connect the city to other areas in the island,” an official statement on Cabinet decisions has informed.
The proposal to conduct the feasibility study for the new airport was presented to the Cabinet by Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Nimal Siripala de Silva.
The Sri Lankan government and the Cabinet of Ministers in June have granted approval to carry out an overhaul in the domestic aviation industry and develop it.

OSL take:

The Sri Lankan government in its Budget 2018 adopted the policy of developing the country’s domestic aviation business. This would also benefit the growing tourism industry in the country. The government has already renovated and developed several existing domestic airports island wide that were previously operated by the Sri Lanka Air Force. The latest government decision to conduct a feasibility study on constructing a domestic airport in the Kandy district is an indication of the expansion in the domestic aviation business. Therefore, foreign investors/businesses looking at business opportunities in Sri Lanka could consider the latest developments in the domestic aviation sector.
