Sri Lanka and Vietnam discuss establishing direct air flights and relaxing visa rules to boost bilateral relations

Sri Lanka and Vietnam has reportedly commenced discussions on the possibilities of relaxing visa rules and establish direct air links between the two countries.
The discussion has commenced following a recent meeting between the Prime Minister of the two countries held in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc had reportedly discussed the possibility of starting direct flights and Sri Lankan Prime Minister Wickremesinghe had has said all facilities would be provided for the move.
“Talks on relaxing visas to promote tourism will begin soon,” a statement from the Prime Minister’s office said.
Wickremesinghe travelled to Vietnam to attend the World Economic Forum regional event focusing on the Association of South East Asian Nations.
Sri Lanka already has direct flights to Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.
Sri Lankans can also travel visa free to Indonesia and Singapore.
Malaysia based Malindo Airlines, Malaysian Airlines and Air Asia are among popular airlines used for travel between Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Sri Lanka’s national carrier, SriLankan Airlines also offers code share flights to Hanoi and Saigon airports, Kuala Lumpur.

OSL take:

The discussion between Sri Lanka and Vietnam to relax visa regulations and operate direct flights would help boost bilateral trade. It would further boost Sri Lanka’s tourism sector since it would encourage western travelers to stop in Sri Lanka on their way to Vietnam on holiday and vice versa. The further strengthening of bilateral ties between the two countries is an encouraging sign for foreign businesses interested in engaging in business ventures in Sri Lanka.
