Sister city tie-up to be established between China and Sri Lanka

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was recently signed by the Monaragala Divisional Secretary and the Magistrate of the People’s Government of Jishan Countyto form a sister-city collaboration between Monaragala situated in the Uva Province of Sri Lanka and the city of Jishan in the Shanxi Province of China.
A Chinese delegation together with six representatives of the Monaragala Divisional Secretariat attended the event.
As per the provisions of the “Communique on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between China and Sri Lanka” the Cabinet of Sri Lanka will facilitate the sister-city association between Monaragala and Jishan.
An excerpt from an official statement that was released reads, “…Considering the opportunity for promotion of friendly relations and deepening mutual understanding between the two countries through this MoU, Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku, Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Beijing expedited the process of arranging the MoU once the proposal was initiated by the Most. Ven. Chang Zang, the Chief Incumbent of Longquan Temple in Beijing where one of the Lord Buddha’s sacred Tooth Relic is kept for reverence.”
In the 5th century a Chinese prelate, Rev Faxian from the Jishan region is said to have visited Sri Lanka in order to obtain a proper understanding of Buddhism, and this historical fact is a reason that binds Jishan to Sri Lanka. In 2016 as part of commemorative celebrations to acknowledge the warm Buddhist interaction between China and Sri Lanka and to honour 60 years of diplomatic relations linking the two countries, a60-acre park, “China-Sri Lanka Friendship Jishan Jujube Orchard”was unveiled in Rev Faxian‘s hometown.

OSL TAKE:

Sister-city relationships cement tie-ups that encourage the sharing of knowledge, technology and resources. It also commonly recognised as a means of better facilitating trade relationships between two geographical locations.
The bond between Monaragala and Jishan will inject much-needed commerce to an area in Sri Lanka that has seen slow economic progress.
The latest tie up could also create a precedent that could be followed by other Sri Lankan cities as well.
