European Council support for Sri Lanka to gain GSP+

Donald Tusk, who heads the European Council has pledged his fullest support to Sri Lanka to regain the GSP+ concessions.
Premier Wickremesinghe yesterday met Donald Tusk who has been President of the European Council since December 2014.
Tusk told Wickremesinghe that Sri Lanka’s current political and social reforms has led to the country obtaining these concessions.
The issue of migrants coming into Europe through illegal means was also discussed during their meeting.
The Sri Lankan PM promised to set up a special task force with the participation of European Council to solve the illegal migrant issue.
The task force will include ministries mentioned below:
• Law and order.
• Resettlement.
• Justice.
• Department of Immigration and Emigration.
The Premier invited Tusk to visit Sri Lanka to observe first-hand the ongoing democratization and development process reshaping the island nation.
Mr. Tusk greatfully accepted the invitation and said he is planning to visit to Sri Lanka next year.
